Christmas Traditions

I don't know about your family, but ours has several traditions that it's just not Christmas without. For instance, we always leave decorated sugar cookies for Santa on Christmas Eve with a small glass of milk. Also, we always open one present on Christmas Eve. The past two years it has been a set of pajamas from Mrs. Clause. The tree always comes out the day of or the day after Thanksgiving and usually stays until after the New Year.

When I was young every Christmas Eve my dad's side of the family had a dinner at my aunt and uncle's house. It happened every year no matter how bad the weather. We used to draw names and exchange gifts but that faded over the years when we started to get older. My grandma and grandpa always gave us an envelope with $5 in it as well. I remember driving out to the house, my aunt and uncle lived out in the country, and looking at the lights here and there. It was so magical just driving to their house in the dark of Christmas Eve searching the sky for any strange object that might be Santa. It was best when it was snowing. I love to watch the snow fall.

When I got into my teens my mom would let me have a very small glass of Asti Spumante with her on Christmas Eve before bed. This was something that was shared just between us.

Does your family have any traditions for the holidays? What are they?

  1. I love this post! We have a lot of traditions that mean so much to me. One of them is that Santa leaves a bag on Christmas eve with a game, our pjs and a snack for us to play. We have a ball with that!

I am launching a new Christmas blog on July 25... would you please mind to share this information with your other Christmas buddies?

    The address will be www.christmastreelane.blogspot.com

Thank you! I am hosting a giveaway to celebrate the blog's launching!

  2. When my brother and I were young, our parents would take us for a drive to pick up a fresh Christmas tree. Then back at home my brother and I would decorate it while singing Christmas carols. Then afterwards we would all sit around the tree drinking hot chocolate.

About 8 years ago, I started a new tradition. I gather all my family at my house for Christmas Eve. Some time after dinner, I ring a little bell signaling that it's time to open gifts. I grab my digital camer which also works as a recorder and have everyone open their gifts at the same time. It's so much fun.

  3. When my kids were young (and still!) we let them open one gift on Christmas Eve. I actually buy a special gift and make a tag with a "24" on it. It was usually pajamas or something like that. We didn't do this in my family growing up but Dear Hubby's family did. Now they are too old for pajamas but they still want a "24th" gift. Some people never grow up!
